Sylvia Nasar, John S. And James L. Knight Professor of Business Journalism, Graduate School of Journalism, Columbia University

Sylvia Nasar currently serves as a John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Business Journalism at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.  Previous to her years as a Knight Professor, Nasar was an economics reporter for the New York Times, economics columnist for US News & World Report and staff writer at Fortune magazine.  Her career as an economist began outside of journalism with tenures at Control Data Corporation, Scientists' Institute for Public Information and the Institute for Economic Analysis, NYU.

Nasar has completed several visiting and fellowship positions at various think tanks and prestigious universities including the Russell Safe Foundation, Institute for advanced Study, University of Cambridge and Princeton University.  She is an acclaimed author of several works including soon to be published Grand Pursuit and the Pulitzer Prize-nominated A Beautiful Mind, as well as editor of Best Science Stories of 2007 and The Essential John Nash.  Nasar has also authored a number of articles pertaining to science and economics, most recently "Manifold Destiny" with David Gruber that appeared in the New Yorker (August 2006). 

Nasar is an active contributor to professional organizations and awards programs that acknowledge excellence in journalism and literature. She has been a juror and panelist for the Dow Jones News Service Award, Biography Panel, Los Angeles Times Book Award, Overseas Press Club Journalism Awards Panel, and National Book Award Non-Fiction Panel among others.  Additionally, Nasar served on the Women's Economic Round Table Panel, Advisory Board of Kings College Archive and as Creative Consultant on The American Experience for WGBH.   Her distinguished roster of achievements as economist, scholar and journalist have landed many honors among them New York Times Publisher's Awards, National Book Critics' Circle Award for Biography, Salon Magazine Book Award, Finalist, Pulitzer Prize for Biography, American Mathematics Society Communications Award, and DeWitt Wallace/reader's Digest Fellowship.

A prolific and celebrated guest lecturer, Nasar continues to share perspective with audiences at forums on campuses and at symposiums throughout the country and internationally.

Nasar holds an M.A. in Economics from New York University, a B.A. in Literature from Antioch College and completed coursework in Literature at the University of Munich, Germany.
