2013 Media for Liberty Award Honors Vanity Fair’s “The Wrath of Putin” by Masha Gessen

Award-winning story uncovers the conflict between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Mikhail Khodorkovsky, once Russia’s wealthiest man

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Liberty Media Corporation (Nasdaq: LMCA, LMCB) last night honored the winner of its fourth annual Media for Liberty Award, a $50,000 prize that recognizes media contributions that explore the link between economic and political liberty. “The Wrath of Putin,” a story by Masha Gessen, was selected by the Media for Liberty Award Jury as the 2013 award winner. Print, broadcast and online submissions were evaluated on criteria including relevance to the public discourse, educational value, mastery of the media format and thematic relevance.

“The Wrath of Putin” masterfully chronicles the clash between two titans, Russian President Vladimir Putin and former wealthiest man in Russia, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, in a relationship which led to Khodorkovsky’s almost decade-long imprisonment and the downfall of his empire. Masha Gessen’s diligent reporting illuminates the bitter war between “one man’s truth and another’s tyranny.”

“This story exposes the challenging nature of the evolution of Russian business and politics and its impact on economic and political liberty,” said John Malone, Chairman of Liberty Media. “We are pleased to honor Masha Gessen for her courage and her outstanding reporting of this important story.”

“The Wrath of Putin” was celebrated at an evening ceremony hosted by Liberty Media and emceed by John Stossel, host of “STOSSEL” on Fox Business and Fox News contributor, at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.
